I rarely talk about politics in my emails or on social media, but with the presidential election less than a month away in the U.S., and some very interesting and unusual shifts happening within the electorate this time, I’m genuinely curious:
Who are you voting for, or who would you vote for if you could vote in the U.S. election?
We are facing an incredibly consequential election. Beyond all of the domestic issues relevant to all of us (economic prosperity, physical safety, preservation of democracy, civil rights, etc….), the world is grappling with the greatest existential crisis we’ve ever faced. The Doomsday Clock, tracked by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, is now set at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest we’ve ever gotten to the possibility of complete global annihilation due to threats posed by nuclear weapons, climate change, and advanced technologies like AI. With the U.S. representing the most powerful and influential country on the planet, in many ways this election is not just about the destiny of the U.S., but the survival of the planet overall.
At the same time, we’ve seen some unusual and even unprecedented realignments in the usual electoral coalitions within our two-party system. Many lifelong Republicans are now voting for Harris, and many lifelong Democrats are now supporting Trump. These shifts make this election even more intriguing.
So, I want to know where you stand and why.
I’ve put together a 3-4 minute anonymous survey, and I’d greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to share your thoughts. Your input will help me understand my audience better, and I’m planning to share some insights from the survey on social media and here next week.

By the way, did you see last week’s newsletter about “The Substance“?
If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, I encourage you to check it out. (Please note that it contains some spoilers that aren’t revealed in the trailer, so if you prefer to watch the movie first, you might want to do that before reading.) I do think it’s worth mentioning that the movie gets quite gory towards the end—I wish I had been warned about that!
I highly recommend watching “The Substance“ in theaters as soon as possible. It’s relevant not just to our own psychological and relational health and well-being (I’ll talk more about that next week), but also because, in some ways, it speaks to the U.S. election and much of the conflict going on around the world.
As the mysterious voice behind The Substance repeatedly reminds the movie’s protagonist (and all of us): “You Are One.”
I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
With love,
Dr. Zhana
