If you’re in the US, chances are you’re spending this weekend with family or friends celebrating Thanksgiving—an arguably strange holiday to celebrate, especially when viewed through the lens of the Native Americans whose land was colonized and whose people were mistreated.
But for many Americans who aren’t thinking about the origins of this holiday, it tends to be an enjoyable time—a moment to come together with loved ones and celebrate togetherness and gratitude.
It’s a strange time in world history. The world is burning both literally and figuratively. Literally, in many parts of the world due to pointless wars that most of us don’t want to be fighting, and due to climate change that we’re continuing not to address properly. Figuratively, through economic hardships that are very real for so many of us, both here in the US and around the world, while the 1% grows richer and more disconnected from the reality in which the 99% live.
The continued and extreme political hyperpolarization—not only in the US but around the world—adds to the challenges we’re facing. These stresses take a toll on our mental and physical health, leading to some of the highest rates of mental health issues and chronic diseases the world has ever seen.
It’s not an easy time. In fact, it might be one of the hardest times to be alive.
So, I don’t blame you if you’re finding it hard to stay optimistic right now. Yet, despite it all, we have to keep going, and we have to keep trying.

This weekend, I hope you’re able to lean into gratitude and the support of those around you. Hold each other close, and find things—no matter how small—to be grateful for.
I also want to express how thankful I am for you—for being part of this community and for your continued support. Your engagement, your thoughts, and your presence here bring me hope and remind me of the strength we have when we come together as a community.
Let’s cherish the moments of connection and hope that can carry us through challenging times.
With love and gratitude,
Dr. Zhana
