  • Brooklyn’s First Sex-Positive and Polyamorous Community Is in Bushwick

If you walk past it, you’ll never know it, but on the streets of Bushwick stands the Hacienda Villa, an intentional, sex-positive, polyamorous community co-founded by Andrew Sparksfire and my business partner Kenneth Play. Founded as a social experiment designed to celebrate sex, educate the curious, and dispel shame, the Hacienda is a growing phenomenon looking to change the narrative of how people approach relationships and create a community, right in the heart of Bushwick, a neighborhood filled with people living alternative lifestyles.  So how does the Hacienda work? And what is polyamory, exactly? Get the answers to these questions and more in this

  • Why Pregnant Couples Should Totally Have Sex

For many couples, pregnancy puts a stop to sex, often driven by the stigma around pregnancy sex. A recent study found that a couple’s attitude toward pregnancy sex affected their overall sexual satisfaction, such that couples with positive attitudes were more satisfied. The study also found that negative attitudes often stem from myths or other cultural beliefs that have no basis in science. As I urged in my recent newsletter, if you’re pregnant give yourself the right to be a sexual being and if your partner is pregnant work on overcoming the harmful beliefs and make your partner feel desired

  • What Squirting Is And Isn’t

Squirting is a popular and hotly debated topic in both porn and sex science research, but we still know so little about it. What is squirting? Is it real? How does it work? Can all vagina-owners squirt? I answer many of your questions about this fascinating phenomenon in this Brides article I got interviewed for. But there’s still SO much we don’t know about it. So if you’d like to contribute to our collective knowledge of it, take the squirting survey that Kenneth Play and I put together. Anyone can take it, regardless of gender or squirting experience!

  • 11 Ways Sex Can Make You Healthier

It’s not very often that we can say that something is fun and healthy, but lo and behold, sex happens to be both! Some of the positive health effects are more obvious, like the fact that sex is a bit of a workout (though, really, it depends on how vigorous your sex is) and it can improve your mood (duh). But some aren’t so obvious. Like for example, that sex and orgasms (well, mostly the orgasms) can strengthen pelvic floor muscles. As I mention in this Insider article I got interviewed for last week, orgasms cause the pelvic floor to contract,

Episode #54: Cocktails Vs. Consent Happy belated New Year! Given that the holiday season is a time when a lot of people consume significant amounts of alcohol AND get frisky while under its influence, Joe and I thought we’d kick off 2019 with a Science of Sex Podcast episode that ties drinking and sexual consent. Specifically, how does being intoxicated impact people’s perceptions of their own and their friends’ ability to consent to sex? In her unusual “naturalistic bar study” (more on that in the podcast), Dr. Michelle Drouin from Purdue University enlisted drunken bar goers and their friends to take a

  • You Can Be in an Open Relationship without Going All the Way

A lot of couples struggle to find complete sexual fulfillment in long-term monogamous relationships. However, opening up to consensual nonmonogamy carries its own set of challenges and fears. And the reality is, complete sexual and romantic openness (like, polyamory, for example) wouldn’t work for everyone either. Luckily, there’s a middle ground. Enter what the famous sex advice columnist Dan Savage called “monogamish”. “Monogamish” is a term to describe couples that are “…mostly monogamous but [engage in] some small amount of sexual openness,” as I explain in an interview for this Vice article “I Went to a Sex Resort to Try

Ep #50: 50 Shades of Trans(Gender) Do you know the difference between sex and gender? Or what it means to be “gender nonconforming”? Trans or transgender? Genderqueer and gender non-binary? Our understanding and language around sex and gender has been rapidly expanding, and we don’t blame you if you’re not super familiar with it all. In last week’s episode, Joe and I talked to Dr. Seth Pardo about his research on the gender identity and gender presentation of 170 folks who were assigned female at birth but identify as gender nonconforming to some extent. From defining important gender terms to giving
