  • Are Bearded Men More Sexist Than Their Clean-Shaven Peers?

Two contrasting studies have people wondering: are bearded men generally more sexist than those who are clean shaven? In some cultures, having facial hair is a signaler of masculinity and general attractiveness, but in many of these cultures, masculinity is also associated with sexism, so researchers theorized that men with beards could be more misogynistic than those without. In order to test this hypothesis, they had over 500 men from the U.S. and India complete an online survey where they reported on their views toward women and the type of facial hair they had. Two types of sexist attitudes were

  • Understanding Male Sexual Aggression: TSOS Podcast, Ep. 12!

Our news cycle has been filled with countless examples of male sexual misconduct, from sexual assault, to harassment, to just general creepiness across virtually every profession and social sphere. With the exception of our groper-in-chief, this has professionally hurt pretty much all of these men, and while we seem to be doing better at holding the perpetrators of these crimes accountable, we are still having trouble identifying why these acts of sexual misconduct are so widespread. To help us explore this question, we interviewed someone who’s been studying male sexual aggression for almost four decades: Dr. Neil Malamuth at UCLA. Dr Malamuth is an

  • The Top 5 Reasons Marriages And Cohabitations End

Most of the studies focusing on divorce and the ending of relationships and cohabitations are based on qualitative research, not quantitative but a new study out of the UK overcomes the disadvantages of past research and provides a clearer insight into why live-in partnerships come to an end. The data come from NATSAL-3, a nationally representative survey of over 15,000 UK residents ages 16-74 interviewed between 2010 and 2012. Overall, 11% of the men and 14% of the women in the sample reported they experienced the end of a live-in partnership (marital or cohabiting) in the 5 years prior to interview (2% of men’s and

In a new #fMRI study, researchers investigated neural correlates of responses to erotic stimuli in 26 heterosexual, 26 #bisexual, and 24 #homosexual women, ages 25–50. Results confirm other research on #sexualorientation: #lesbians (like #gay and straight men) show greater brain activation to images of women (vs. men), but hetero women’s brains are like those of #bisexuals, responding equally to male and female stimuli. The takeaway? Homosexual women have greater #gender bias in their responses to male and female erotic stimuli. Interestingly, this study is also the first of its kind to include bisexual women!
