Special Guest:
Atrina Brill, LMSW
http://atrinabrill.com/
– Masters of Social Work, Columbia University School of Social Work
– Bachelors of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley

Atrina’s study of relationships and sexuality is based in her long-standing interest and experience in non-traditional relationships and alternative sexualities. Having identified as polyamorous since 2000, she has had many years to explore alternative love-styles and sexualities, in addition to her vast study. This provides not only in depth perspective from study, but also personal anecdotes and experiences as appropriate.

Atrina has been interested in the study of non-traditional relationships, sexuality, and gender since a very early age. Both at UC Berkeley and at the Columbia School of Social Work, Atrina took every class on sexuality and as many on gender as was possible, continuing a more in-depth study outside of school. She has worked as a sexual assault victim advocate and crisis counselor, conflict mediator, and sexuality educator and researcher throughout most of her college life and beyond. Knowledge hungry, Atrina has attended a countless number of workshops, speaking events, and classes on these topics and continues to do so. During her Social Work training, Atrina specialized in non-traditional relationships and sexualities, leading to a very in-depth understanding of clinical and relationship issues that affect relationships and individuals.

Atrina employs her sex-positive and non-jugmental approach to HIV prevention as well. As a Research Coordinator for the Hunter HIV/AIDS Research Team, Atrina is involved in the study of HIV prevention interventions. Specifically, Atrina’s research focuses on studying the acceptability, access, and adherence to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and its implications for a harm reduction approach to HIV prevention.

Do gentlemen really prefer #blondes? A new #evopsych study with a sample of 110 male undergraduates (87% white) sought to find out. Results showed that hair color and to a lesser extent length *do* affect perceptions of personal characteristics. Specifically, lighter hair (#blond and #brunette) was associated with perceptions of #youth, #health and #attractiveness to a greater extent than was black hair, and generally led to more positive perceptions of relationship and parenting potential. The findings for hair length were somewhat less consistent, but they generally suggested that longer hair was associated with youth, enhanced relationship potential, perceptions of #promiscuity and somewhat diminished perceptions of parenting potential. The takeaway? For men, women’s hair can serve as a cue to desired relationship and parenting characteristics.
